Kannada Subtitle Generator

Kannada speech in, Kanglish or Kannada-script captions out.

Most subtitle tools treat Kannada as an afterthought, or hand back captions in formal written Kannada that nobody actually speaks. But look at how Kannada is typed on YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp, in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Dharwad alike: "hegiddira", "chennagide", "swalpa adjust maadi". That is Kanglish, and for short-form video it is what your viewers read fastest.

DesiCaptions transcribes Kannada speech and writes it the way people type it, with the spoken forms kept as spoken, English words kept in English and Kannada words in plain Roman letters. Prefer Kannada script? Switch the language to Kannada (Kannada script) and the same video comes out in proper Kannada letters, still in the words you said, with English sentences translated and the everyday loanwords Kannada creators actually use kept the way they write them.

Either way every word carries its own timestamp, so word-by-word and karaoke caption styles land on the beat, and the Kannada-script mode ships with fonts that actually contain the glyphs, so you never get empty boxes, broken ottaksharas or Telugu letters where Kannada should be.

Why creators use it

Kanglish the way it is typed

Captions come out as "hegiddira" and "tumba chennagide", the spelling your audience already uses in comments. No diacritics, no textbook spellings.

Spoken Kannada, not textbook Kannada

The captions say "maadtini" when you said "maadtini", not the written "maaduttene", in your own dialect. Your viewers notice when a caption sounds like a newsreader.

Kannada script when you want it

Pick the Kannada (Kannada script) mode for a Kannada-first audience or formal content. Bundled Kannada fonts keep every vowel sign and ottakshara intact in the burned video.

Word-level timing

Every word carries its own timestamp, so word-by-word and karaoke caption styles land on the beat instead of drifting.

How it works

  1. Upload your Kannada video or audio

MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, M4A, or WAV, up to 4 GB. The free plan includes 1 free minute.

  2. Pick Kanglish or Kannada (Kannada script)

About a minute later for a Reel, or 2 to 3 minutes for a 5-minute video, you have a full transcript with word-level timestamps, in the script you chose.

  3. Style and export

Choose a caption template, fix any names in the editor, then export a burned-in video or an SRT, VTT, or ASS file.

One sentence, every mode

The same spoken line as DesiCaptions writes it in each mode you can pick for this language:

Kanglish (Roman script)

Ivattu naanu nimge nimma life nalli yaavattu nodirada ondu super vishaya toristini

Kannada (Kannada script)

ಇವತ್ತು ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಲೈಫ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವತ್ತೂ ನೋಡಿರದ ಒಂದು ಸೂಪರ್ ವಿಷಯ ತೋರಿಸ್ತೀನಿ

English (translated)

Today I am going to show you something absolutely amazing that you have never ever seen before in your entire life

What is different about captioning Kannada

Spoken Kannada and written Kannada are far apart: people say "maadtini" and "hogtidini" where a textbook writes "maaduttene" and "hoguttiddene". Captions that use the written form do not match what the viewer hears, so DesiCaptions keeps the spoken form in both Kanglish and Kannada script, and keeps the final vowel every Kannada word ends in.

Kannada script looks like Telugu but is a different script, and it stacks the second consonant of a cluster below the first (the ottakshara in ಕನ್ನಡ). Kannada-script captions are set in Kannada fonts (Noto Sans Kannada, Baloo Tamma 2), with about 32 characters per automatic caption against 42 in Kanglish.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kanglish?

Kannada written in Roman letters, the way people type it on phones: "neevu hegiddira", "nanage gottilla". It is not a translation, only the alphabet changes, and the words, tone and slang stay exactly as spoken.

Will Kannada-script captions render correctly in every caption style?

Yes. Kannada captions are set in Noto Sans Kannada, or Baloo Tamma 2 for the comic templates, in both the editor preview and the exported video, so what you see is what burns.

Does it handle Kannada mixed with English and Hindi?

Yes. Code-mixed speech is the normal case. In Kanglish mode English words stay English and Kannada words are romanised; in Kannada-script mode English sentences are translated and Hindi is rendered in Kannada, never in Devanagari or Telugu script.

Can I get English captions for a Kannada video instead?

Yes. Choose English (Translate) and the Kannada speech is translated into natural English captions.

What does it cost?

There is a free plan with 1 free minute and no credit card required. Each video uses exactly its own length from your balance. Paid minute packs start at 12 USD or 799 INR and never expire.
