How Hindi typing works
Most people who write Hindi on a laptop or phone do not use a Hindi keyboard layout. They type the word the way it sounds, in English letters, and let the computer write it in Devanagari. This tool does exactly that: type "mujhe pata nahi tha" and you get मुझे पता नहीं था, one word at a time, as you press space.
Hinglish has no fixed spelling, so the tool does not ask you to learn one. "pani" and "paani" both give पानी, "accha" and "acha" both give अच्छा, "kaise" and "kese" both give कैसे. Behind it is a list of about 24,000 Hindi words, ordered by how common they are, each matched to the ways people type it. Names and rare words that are not on the list are spelled out letter by letter with Hindi spelling rules.
Examples
| You type (English letters) | You get (Hindi) |
|---|---|
| aap kaise ho? | आप कैसे हो? |
| mujhe samajh nahi aaya | मुझे समझ नहीं आया |
| pehle paani garam karo | पहले पानी गरम करो |
| video accha laga to like karein | वीडियो अच्छा लगा तो लाइक करें |
Picking a different word
Some spellings fit more than one Hindi word: "ki" can be की or कि, "kal" can be कल or काल. While you type, the strip under the box shows the choices for the current word, best first. After a word turns into Hindi you can still tap another choice to swap it in. The last button keeps the word in English letters.
Pressed space too early? Backspace right after a Hindi word brings back the English letters so you can fix the spelling.
Shortcuts
- Space, Enter or punctuation turns the word you just typed into Hindi.
- A full stop after a Hindi word becomes the purna viram (।).
- Ctrl+G switches between Hindi and English typing, for English words you want to keep as they are.
- Paste a whole paragraph of Hinglish and it is converted in one go.
How accurate is it?
On everyday sentences we tested, the first choice was the right word for about 49 words in 50, and the right word was nearly always among the choices. It is weakest on names, rare words and English words it has not seen in Hindi, where it spells by sound. Read what you typed once before you post it.
Everything runs in your browser with fixed rules and a word list, no AI. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored, and the page keeps working if you go offline after it loads.

Is this Hindi typing tool free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit, because it runs in your browser rather than on a server.
Do I need a Hindi keyboard?
No. You type with the normal English keyboard on your laptop or phone, and the words are written in Hindi (Devanagari) for you.
Does it translate English into Hindi?
No. It changes the script, not the language. Type Hindi words in English letters ("dhanyavaad") and you get them in Hindi letters (धन्यवाद). Typing an English sentence will not translate it.
Can I use the Hindi text in Instagram, WhatsApp or Word?
Yes. The result is standard Unicode Hindi, so Copy and paste it anywhere: captions, comments, documents or subtitle files. You can also download it as a .txt file.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The typing happens on your device. Nothing you type leaves your device.
Can I go the other way, from Hindi to Hinglish?
Yes. Use the Hindi to Hinglish converter to turn Devanagari into English letters.
