Subtitle Time Shift

Positive = later, negative = earlier

How it works

The most common subtitle problem is a constant offset: every caption shows up half a second late, or two seconds early. It happens when a video is trimmed after the subtitles were made, when an intro is added, or when a file made for one cut of a video is used on another.

Enter how far to move the captions, in seconds. A positive number makes them appear later, a negative number earlier. Every start and end time moves by exactly that amount, the file format stays the same, and you download the fixed file.

How to find the right amount

  1. Play the video and pick one clear line of speech.
  2. Note the time the person starts speaking, and the start time of that caption in the file.
  3. Subtract: speech time minus caption time. If the speech is at 12.4 s and the caption at 11.9 s, shift by 0.5.
  4. Use the -0.1 and +0.1 buttons to fine-tune, then download.

Only part of the video is out of sync

If the captions are fine at the start and drift after a cut, fill in the "From" time next to the shift amount. Captions before that time stay where they are, and only the later ones move. Shifting earlier past 0:00 removes captions that would end before the video starts, and the tool tells you how many.

If the drift keeps growing through the video instead of staying constant, the subtitles were made for a different frame rate or edit, and a single shift will not fix it. Our guide to subtitles out of sync after export covers that case.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter a positive or negative number?

Positive if the captions appear before the speech (they need to come later), negative if they appear after it (they need to come earlier).

Does it work with VTT files?

Yes. SRT stays SRT and VTT stays VTT, including any WebVTT position settings.

Can I shift by less than a second?

Yes, down to the millisecond. Enter 0.25 or -0.04, for example.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up. Files up to 5 MB.
