SRT to ASS Converter
Turn an SRT into an ASS file you can style in Aegisub or burn in with FFmpeg.
Free. No sign-up. Nothing leaves your device.
How it works
SRT is plain words and times. When you want control over how captions look (font, size, outline, position), the usual next step is ASS. Aegisub edits it, VLC and mpv play it, and FFmpeg burns it into a video with the subtitles or ass filter.
Paste or upload the SRT and download a complete .ass file. It is ready to open, with a sensible default style already set, so it looks right before you change anything.
The style you get
The file is set up for 1080p video (PlayResX 1920, PlayResY 1080). Captions use a single style called Default: Arial at size 64, white text, a 3 pixel black outline with a light shadow, centred at the bottom with a 60 pixel margin. Open it in Aegisub and change the Default style to restyle every line at once.
<i>,<b>and<u>become{\i1},{\b1}and{\u1}.- Line breaks become
\N. <font>tags are removed. Set colours in the style instead.- Curly braces in the text become round brackets, because ASS would hide anything inside braces.
- Times are written in hundredths of a second, as ASS requires, so 00:00:01,238 becomes 0:00:01.24.
Burning the captions in with FFmpeg
Once you have the .ass file, one FFmpeg command puts it into the picture:
ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vf "ass=captions.ass" -c:a copy output.mp4
For Hindi, Tamil or other Indian scripts, set the Default style to a font that has those letters, such as Noto Sans Devanagari. Arial has none, so the player has to borrow a fallback font, which can look mismatched or, on a machine without one, show boxes.
Skip the file juggling
Upload a video and DesiCaptions writes word-timed captions in Hinglish, Hindi and other Indian languages, then exports SRT, VTT, ASS or a burned-in video. 1 free minute, no card.
Caption a video freeFrequently asked questions
Can I change the font and colours?
Yes. Open the file in Aegisub (Subtitle, Styles Manager) or edit the Style: Default line in any text editor. Every caption uses that one style.
Will timing change when converting SRT to ASS?
Only by rounding. ASS stores hundredths of a second, so an SRT time with three decimal places is rounded to the nearest hundredth, never more than 5 milliseconds.
Can I convert ASS back to SRT?
Yes, with the ASS to SRT converter.
Does it work with Hindi, Tamil or other scripts?
Yes. Any language and any script, emoji included, passes through untouched as UTF-8.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted on your device and never leaves it.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit beyond 5 MB per file. The conversion runs in your browser, so there is no server cost to pass on.
